Apple's official
announcement that AJAX is
the iPhone's SDK of
choice reinforced Laszlo
Systems' vision, having
already built its
OpenLaszlo RIA
development platform to
inherently support AJAX.
This session will discuss
how OpenLaszlo is
architected to work with
iPhone today, and will
provide insight into how
Laszlo gurus, Ben Shine
and Bret Simister,
created an animated news
game from scratch in only
24 hours. Named one of
the 8 coolest iPhone apps
by Wired Magazine,
'NewsMatch' exemplifies
the power of the
OpenLaszlo platform and
its cinematic user
interface.
A blogger calling himself
'Fake Steve Jobs,' whose
parody of the Apple Inc.
(AAPL.O: Quote, Profile,

amused and enthralled
Silicon Valley, revealed
himself on Sunday as an
editor of Forbes business
magazine. Dan Lyons is
also known with his 'Who

cover story. This Adweek
blog says 'Daniel Lyons

Sony and the Cell chip,
used in its bedeviled
PlayStation 3, have been
charged with patent
infringement in the
patent-savvy
prosecution-leaning Texas
federal courts by an
entity nobody ever heard
of that can't be found on
the Internet - or for
that matter in corporate
filings in California or
Delaware, according to
Ars Technica who says it
looked - called Parallel
Processing Corporation.
Whoever it is - and the
blogosphere seems to
think it's part of Acacia
Technologies, a great
patent troll - is the
'exclusive licensee' of
the 1991 patent (No.
5,056,000), originally
filed by International
Parallel Machines, that
describes a high-speed
computer that breaks
programs down 'into
smaller concurrent
processes running in
different parallel
processors' and then
resynchronizes them into
faster processing speeds.
Hmmm. Sound very
Cell-ish.
The AJAX Company Backbase
announced that its
Enterprise AJAX software
suite will support
Apple's long-anticipated
iPhone. Aligning its
development with Apple's
unfolding strategy for
the sexy new device,
Backbase has added
support for the new
platform, including
Apple?s Web browser for
iPhone, Safari 3, and the
code-named Leopard
operating system. The
Backbase SDK enables

Last month an EU ruling
limited how much
providers can charge for
'roaming calls' i.e.
those call made whilst
abroad. At the moment
users are charged between
50p to £1.50 to make
calls and are also
charged to receive them.
The new legislation cuts
the maximum charge for
European calls to 33p a
minute and to just 16p
per minute to receive
calls.
Flat-data rate tariffs
introduced by Orange,
Vodafone and 3 networks
in the UK are the first
sign that the Mobile Web
is set to become as
ubiquitous as normal web
use with the these flat
tariffs bringing
affordable mobile web
access to nearly everyone
who has a mobile web
enabled phone. These
tariffs critically remove
the single impasse that
has prevented even wider
spread adoption - 'fair
us' browsing within a
single payment.
Astonomical costs have
previously put off users
from going online from
their mobile device - no
wonder given the, often,
several pounds per
megabyte charge that most
providers locked you into
if you wanted to surf or
access email from your
phone.

Wall Street Journal
reported today 'The
company, which has made
billions of dollars in
Web advertising on
computers, is courting
wireless operators to
carry handsets customized
to Google products,
including its search
engine, email and a new
mobile Web browser, say
people familiar with the
plans. It wants to
capture a big chunk of
the fast-growing market
for ads on cellphones.
Google has invested
hundreds of millions of
dollars in the cellphone
project, say people who
have been briefed on it.
It has developed
prototype handsets, made
overtures to operators
such as T-Mobile USA and
Verizon Wireless, and
talked over technical
specifications with phone
manufacturers. It hopes
multiple manufacturers
will make devices based
on its specs and multiple
carriers will offer
them.'
A seasoned Java
professional has to know
more than just the syntax
of the Java language.
Java EE offers a set of
standardized technologies
for enterprise
development. A number of
open-source frameworks
such as Spring or
Hibernate are widely used
in a variety of Java
applications. Familiarity
with new 'beyond-Java'
languages and
technologies will widen
your horizons and make
you a more valuable Java
professional. Real-World
Java Seminar is sponsored
by CodeGear, Red Hat,
Nexaweb, Farata Systems,
and PushToTest.
In the past if you cannot
access the Internet then
you cannot use your Web
2.0 applications. This
model is rapidly
changing. New pogramming
models are emerging that
alllow Web 2.0 to be
offline /online dependent
on what is needed. The
first of these is Adobe
Apollo, which is a
cross-platfrom technology
that combined Flash,
HTML, PDF and JavaScript
into one universal
application programming
model / paradigm. What is
unique is that id doesn't
care if if it runs on its
own or embedded in a
webpage, the API calls
remains the same.
Wall Street got vicious
and took nigh on to a $9
bite out of Apple on
Tuesday, the stock's
worse day in seven years,
after AT&T, the iPhone's
sole carrier, reported
that only 146,000 of the
gadgets were activated in
the first 30 hours of
sales. That was the 30
hours before the second
quarter closed shut, and
the number was far below
the market's opium
eaters-like expectations
of hundreds of thousands
moving.
Intel has started the
Mobile & Internet Linux
Project (moblin.org) in
support of Intel-based
widgetry. It's supposed
to be an umbrella
operation under which a
number of key elements
for embedded
distributions like
Ubuntu's Mobile and
Embedded Edition, Pepper
Linux and Red Flag's
Midinux are hosted. It's
also supposed to be a
point of integration to
ensure interoperability.
Today's the 25th of July,
the iPhone shipped on
June 29, that's the day I
got mine, so we're
getting pretty close to
the end of a month with
the iPhone. The tech
press usually doesn't
review products after a
month of use, but that's
when you really find out
if it was worth the
initial hype. The NY
Times reports that iPhone
sales are disappointing,
I'd like to add that the
product itself is
disappointing. I still
own and use a Blackberry
for its email and web
capabilities, both of
which outshine Apple's
product. Because the
iPhone doesn't have a
search command, and
apparently doesn't store
messages locally, it
makes a poor choice for a
mobile email client.
Two-year-old a la mobile
is promising to announce
the world's most secure
Linux operating systems
platform for smartphones
any minute now. Its
patented Mobile Security
Engine combines
enterprise security
features like sandboxing
and encryption with the
bootloader and kernel in
the handset, widgetry
that's supposed to make
it virtually impenetrable
to outside hardware or
software nasties.
It's widely recognized
that the
telecommunications
industry is riding the
crest of change and
evolution on the back of
new access technologies
such as 3G, GPRS, and
Wi-Fi. Such IP-centric
access mechanisms must
also be considered in
conjunction with the
emergence of
feature-enabling
technologies such as
VoIP, instant messaging,
and presence. A whole new
converged
telecommunications world
is emerging that requires
an appropriate
complementary IP-based
infrastructure as opposed
to the legacy,
circuit-switched
solutions of the past.
I recently wrapped up an
18-month stint on the
business subcomittee of
the Wireless Washtenaw

growing movement by local
government to help
citizens participate in
today's high-speed data
networks.

It's going to cost at

Apple put its Safari
browser on Windows, a
browser that isn't even
supposed to be the best
browser for the Mac.
Immediately the move was
cast as a reprise of the
browser wars and by jingo
within 48 hours Apple was
reporting more than a
million downloads. Safari
has previously had 5%
market share. Apple
claims the Safari 3 rev
can render web pages
twice as fast as IE7 and
1.6 times faster than
Firefox 2. It has
bookmarks, tabs, a
built-in RSS reader and
private browsing to
ensure information about
the user's browsing
history isn't stored.
iPhone, one of the most
hyped products ever and
occasionally called the
'Jesus phone' like it was
the Second Coming, is
about to hit the market
so Apple figured it had
better say 'one more
thing' before it casts
off. The gadget is going
to be able to access
YouTube content. IPhone
will be the first mobile
device to take advantage
of YouTube's new
H.264-encoded format,
which is supposed to
improve video quality and
preserve battery life.
This, and AJAX, we're

This coming Saturday
(16th June) will be
Yahoo! Hack Day here in
London, and a few members
of my buddy's company

be on hand. But rather
than just attending, they
though it might be a bit
of fun if they tried to

turn it into their own

they are delighted to
present 'The

Carriers and content
providers are looking to
boost revenue streams
through the introduction

Search Brands Still Offer
Stronger Reach on PCs
According to inaugural
results from the
MobileWeb Metrix service,
The Weather Channel,
Yahoo! Weather and
AccuWeather achieved
mobile reach that
outpaced their PC reach.
All three sites had
mobile-to-PC reach index
scores above 120,
pointing to significantly
stronger reach among
mobile Web users than
among PC Web users (see
Table 1). With an index
of 190, ESPN also has
stronger reach among
mobile Web users.
