Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute Completes House-Wide Implementation of the LifeSync(R) Wireless ECG System

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- LifeSync Corporation, the innovator of the LifeSync(R) Wireless ECG System, today announced that Florida Hospital in Orlando has completed a house-wide implementation of the LifeSync(R) System throughout its Cardiovascular Institute for patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Florida Hospital Orlando, the largest of seven hospitals in the Florida Hospital System, houses the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute, ranked number three in the nation for number of open heart surgeries. Twenty-five thousand patients are admitted into the Institute where 11,000 cardiac procedures and 2,000 open heart surgeries are performed annually. Since 1981, the Institute has performed more than 82,000 heart surgeries.

As part of its evaluation of the system, Florida Hospital completed an IRB- approved study to determine how the LifeSync(R) System would impact the incidences of interruptions to cardiac monitoring to improve patient safety and increase nurse productivity. The result of the study showed a significant reduction in lead-off alarms and a decrease in unscheduled nursing time spent handling dislodged ECG wires. The study also found that while using the LifeSync(R) System, daily patient time-off monitor decreased. Based on the results of the study, Florida Hospital signed a three year agreement with LifeSync and has installed the LifeSync(R) System throughout its Cardiovascular Institute.

"The Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute, Orlando campus, continues to lead the way in patient safety by recently implementing the LifeSync(R) System for patients undergoing open heart surgery. In addition to reducing lead-off alarms, the LifeSync(R) System encourages early ambulation by untethering the patient from the monitors, allowing patients freedom of movement in the critical care environment," said Jean Turcotte RN MA CCRN CFC, Administrative Manager CVICU. Additionally, the study tracked the impact the disposable LeadWear(R) sets used with the LifeSync(R) System had on infections. While the Cardiovascular Institute currently experiences infection rates substantially below the national average, the Florida Hospital researchers from the Center for Nursing Research & Innovation found a meaningful incremental reduction in infection incidence with the use of the LifeSync(R) System.

"The use of the LifeSync(R) System and its disposable LeadWear(R) sets shows our commitment to providing a positive patient experience," says Dr. Kevin Accola, Florida Hospital cardiovascular surgeon. "We want each patient with a chest incision to know that they are important to us, important enough to have their own set of lead wires."

Shelley Hartman, President of LifeSync Corporation, said, "Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute is ranked as one of the top hospitals in the nation for patient enrollment in cardiovascular research studies. The multi-disciplinary team cares for more than 70,000 cardiac-related visits annually -- treating more heart and vascular patients than any other hospital in the nation. LifeSync Corporation is proud to be partnered with this prestigious institution on patient safety and hospital productivity."

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
