U4EA Technologies and Vidtel Team Up to Deliver QoS-enabled Video Calling Service for SMBs

U4EA Technologies, a leading provider of integrated access technology for unified communications, today announced that it will partner with Vidtel to deliver video communication services to small-to-medium sized businesses. By combining U4EA’s Fusion series Multi-service Business Gateways (MSBG) with Vidtel’s new video calling and conferencing services, video call quality is ensured and WAN bandwidth is fully utilized.

Vidtel is the world’s first video communication service to make video calling and instant video conferencing accessible for distributed offices, telecommuting, customer service and other businesses where personal contact is key. Vidtel fills the void between high-end room conferencing systems and lower-quality video chat with an affordable service that provides always-on, easy-to-use, instant video calling and conferencing capabilities on every desktop.

The Fusion Series MSBGs combine multiple functions – including that of a router, switch, firewall/NAT, IPSec/VPN, IDS, session controller, bandwidth manager, VoIP Gateway, QoS and management – into one device for the secure, reliable delivery of unified voice, data and video communications. U4EA’s patented QoS (GoSTM), supports multiple real-time applications, and is the only QoS technology specifically designed to support unified communications, including video applications.

U4EA’s MSBG adds value to the Vidtel services by:

  • “Guaranteeing” video quality – U4EA’s GoSTM separates priority queues for voice and video traffic to ensure optimal support of priority applications
  • Guaranteeing quality in BYOB (Bring Your Own Broadband) scenarios, including QoS in the downstream direction
  • Ensuring that new calls are set up only when there is sufficient bandwidth available, thereby protecting ongoing calls through U4EA’s Video Call Admission Control (CAC)
  • Ease of use, with intuitive Wizards for simplifying tasks such as initial setup, QoS configuration, VPN assignment, etc.

“As Vidtel grows its business, we know that quality and maximum, efficient use of the WAN link bandwidth are very important to ensuring SMBs can deploy multiple video devices at their company locations,” said Scott Wharton, Founder and CEO of Vidtel. “U4EA has demonstrated that its QoS uniquely addresses video call quality and WAN link issues. We look forward to working closely with U4EA to deliver a high quality video service to the SMB market.”

“We are excited to establish this relationship with Vidtel, a company that has an innovative approach to video for the SMB marketplace,” said Jeff Dixon, Chief Strategy Officer for U4EA Technologies. “Vidtel understands the value of U4EA’s QoS (GoS) in solving the LAN to WAN potential bottleneck. By deploying our Fusion MSBGs, combined with Vidtel’s services, Vidtel will offer the best quality of experience possible.”

Visit U4EA and Vidtel (March 30 – April 2) at VoiceCon in Orlando at U4EA’s booth #838. U4EA and Vidtel will be demonstrating their combined solution and profiling Polycom’s new VVX 1500 Business Media Phone, its premier appliance for video calling and video conferencing in small-to-medium sized enterprises.

Media phones are the technology to watch for in 2009, according to In-Stat, which recently released a report touting the benefits of media phones. The research firm believes that media phones for business will generate $3.3 billion in annual sales by 2013, while consumer-focused media phones will generate anywhere between $4 billion and $8 billion in revenue for the same time period.

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
