Yesterday we read the news of B-hive's acquisition by VMware. Also this week Microsoft closed the Kidaro acquisition, which was already announced earlier in the year. Both of these companies participated in SYS-CON's second international Virtualization Conference & Expo last November in San Francisco. This event was also the last conference BEA Systems sponsored, days before their Oracle acquisition news hit the press. PlateSpin is one of the Gold Sponsors of the upcoming 3rd International Virtualization Conference & Expo in New York City. Novell bought the company before this event has even taken place. In the past six months four out of nine Virtualization Conference sponsors were acquired.

Jeff Nick, EMC CTO, delivered the opening keynote at the first International Virtualization Conference & Expo last May in New York City, weeks before their VMware initial public offering.This June, VMware CTO Stephen Herrod is one of the opening keynotes of the conference. Of course, another rock star keynote coming up is Microsoft's virtualization chief Mike Neil. These events serve as a valuable industry forum where people get to meet each other, talk, exchange ideas, and learn.

I can go back, check my notes, and tell you of at least a dozen companies that were acquired after participating and sponsoring a major industry event such as this one in the past two years. There are more than 30 sponsors I see listed at the upcoming Virtualization Conference & Expo in New York City. I wonder how many new press releases we will read after this show.

Industry events are always a good place to measure up the technologies offered by competing software companies. A number of VC firm representatives are always present at any major conference and expo.

I am by no means saying sponsors or exhibitors of an industry conference are there to be acquired. But if your company is on the block for potential buyers, these events bring a very high level of visibility in the market place, and nothing is wrong with that. The statistcs during the past twelve months are interesting, but this also shows how hot the virtualization market is. We witnessed a similar consolidation in the SOA market during the past two years where IBM ended up owning the entire SOA world.
