Networking: Share printers and save money for your small business

LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In many ways, networking is one of the keys to running a successful small business. By networking with other small business owners, you can gain valuable insight and support. Networking with customers helps you increase visibility and build loyalty. Likewise, by networking your office technology - including printers - you can share resources and save significant dollars for your business.

"Through a network, a small business can simply install one printer to be shared across multiple workstations," said Marty Canning, Lexmark vice president and president of its Printing Solutions and Services Division. "This helps cut down on costs associated with purchasing and servicing multiple machines, allowing small businesses to streamline processes and increase productivity."

Networking provides a mode for computers to communicate between each other as well as with printers and other hardware. Setting up a network is easier than you might think. First, each device is connected to a network hub (switch or router) using standard network cabling or wirelessly. Next, the devices are assigned unique addresses, usually done automatically by a server or router. Once each device has a unique address, communication between devices can begin.

All Lexmark laser printers and many Lexmark inkjet printers are capable of being networked. For example, the Lexmark E250dn monochrome laser printer comes standard with networking. Compact and ultra-quiet, it prints at speeds up to 30 pages per minute (ppm) for $249(1). It also comes equipped with two- sided printing to reduce paper waste and drive down costs.

For small businesses that want to make an impact with color, the network- ready Lexmark C500n color laser printer offers print speeds of up to 31 ppm in black and eight ppm in color for $349(1). To help businesses reduce costs even further, the network-ready Lexmark X500n color laser multifunction product combines high-performance color printing with copy and scan capabilities, printing at speeds of up to 31 ppm in black and eight ppm in color for $499(1).

If your business doesn't have a wired network, a wireless inkjet printer may come in handy. The Lexmark X9350 Wireless Office All-in-One is equipped with built-in wireless connectivity and automatic two-sided printing. Priced at $249(1), the X9350 allows users to print, copy, scan and fax, with print speeds up to 32 ppm(2) in black and 27 ppm(2) in color. The X9350 is also backed by an exclusive Lexmark Protection Guarantee(3), with next-business-day replacement for up to one year after purchase.

In addition to the wide range of printers that come standard with networking, Lexmark provides businesses the opportunity to gain networking capabilities with external print servers as the business grows. Lexmark offers a complete line of print servers and adapters. One example is the N4050e 802.11g Wireless Print Server, which provides investment protection by allowing connections to any supported printing product. Lexmark print servers come either standard with typical cable connections or can be connected wirelessly, so small businesses can choose the type of networking that best suits their workgroup.
