Should the Mobile Directory Market Count?

The future of the Directory Enquiries (DQ) market is ensured, if mobile customers are viewed as a key market segment. Visiongain Publisher's latest report, "Mobile Directory Services 2004-2009", argues that the DE/DQ market can grow; but the numbers of mobile subscribers must be included in listings, not just the numbers of those supplying services to them.

The current directories are old and the information is becoming increasingly unreliable, as DQ services contain fewer of the real numbers that are used every day. If the mobile directory market is to develop, this would pose challenges to the business model of the current directories. The potential value provided by the mobile directories is great.

The European mobile listing market, assuming that not all countries will launch mobile directories, alone is worth $2.67 billion by 2009. Current European mobile directories are not profitable, in comparison to fixed-line directories which contain a higher percentage of valid numbers. This can change rapidly, so the mobile market must be actively monitored by mobile telecoms operators, DA/DQ service providers, DA/DQ solutions providers, regulators, database companies, call center operators, and investment banks.

"Despite increased competition due to de-regulation and the evolution of services, the DQ market is facing a decline in call volumes" says Adrian Hinchcliffe, telecoms report analyst. This is could be a turbulent time for directory services. According to the latest Visiongain report "Mobile Directory Services 2004-2009", the future for the DQ market is guaranteed, providing it recognizes mobile phone subscribers as a key market segment.

Visiongain maintains that DQ companies and mobile phone providers can generate revenues by the cooperative integration of the two. Of particular regulatory concern, is the selling of customer information to third parties if they were free of regulation
