Mark Hinkle's "EncoreOpus" BlogI am very conflicted by Steve Jobs iPology. You see I bought the iPhone on day one. Normally, I would say they told me the price, I paid it, and I moved on no big deal. I am/was happy that I purchased the iPhone it's been a very cool choice for me.
However, when Steve issued his apology he made me think twice. I understand technology pricing fluctuates and that sometimes you don't get it right. The issue for me is that because of our zeal in supporting his product we made the iPhone a smashing success. Because of that they know that they can make some cash by lowering the price and selling a boatload of iPhones this holiday season. Maybe Steve should share the wealth.
Steve (Chazin not Jobs) points out that the event where they announced the new lower priced iPhone probably was worth the cost of all the $100 refunds. So now I am having thoughts that maybe i am a sucker. My brother and my friends who have been until this week jealous of my telebling are having a good laugh at my expense.
If I were an Apple marketeer, I would advise them not to apologize, but to reward their customers for making you success. What would be a more interesting is to come out with some special edition "early adopter" case for the iPhone attached to our $100 rebate. Make it Apple wicked cool, have Steve Jobs include 100 personally autographed, "Thanks for your support" letters in the whole batch. Make it a Willie Wonka type event. Do it with style, make it fun, include your golden tickets in the refunds. It would create a sense of exclusivity and give those people a sense of value, and it would be much more appreciated than a $100 gift card to the local Apple store.
