Real-Time Insights for Large-Scale IoT Initiatives

A critical component of any IoT project is the back-end systems that capture data from remote IoT devices and structure it in a way to answer useful questions. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle large data sets, but they are not well suited to many IoT-scale products and the need for real-time insights.

At Fuze, we have developed a backend platform as part of our mobility-oriented cloud service that uses Big Data-based approaches to gather data at scale from mobile and other remote devices. This data is used to create real-time business insights for end users.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Derek Yoo, co-founder and CTO of Fuze, will discuss how their technical approach, which will be described, can be applied to large-scale IoT initiatives where real-time insights are necessary.

Speaker Bio
Derek Yoo is co-founder and CTO of Fuze, responsible for the technology and product strategy behind the Fuze cloud communications platform. Fuze helps enterprises move their legacy on premise communications infrastructure to a cloud-based mobile user experience coupled with a rich set of data insights that help make end users and managers more efficient. He has spent the last 10+ years building and scaling the Fuze platform which includes voice, mobile, pbx, video, web collaboration, enterprise messaging, contact center, and data analytics features.

Previously, Derek served as product manager at BladeLogic, an industry-leading provider of enterprise data center automation software. At BladeLogic, he defined and launched products in the early devops market including a platform for automated server provisioning and ongoing configuration management. Bringing the right devops message and product to the enterprise market was a catalyst for BladeLogic's tremendous growth from a start-up through an IPO in 2007 and eventual acquisition by BMC Software for $880 million. Prior to BladeLogic, he worked at WebYes, a high end application hosting provider, where he developed and managed high availability ecommerce applications deployed across 11 data centers on four continents.

Derek holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...

Poor data quality and analytics drive down business value. In fact, Gartner estimated that the average financial impact of poor data quality on organizations is $9.7 million per year. But bad data is much more than a cost center. By eroding trust in information, analytics and the business decisions based on these, it is a serious impediment to digital transformation.
