The Growing Need for Mobile Tech Talent Is the Most Disruptive Trend in Hiring

Employment statistics reflect what technology-focused recruiters and project managers already know: new talent acquisition, especially in mobile app development, is the competitive environment. The industry keeps adding jobs, as the growth in mobile tech opportunities is driven by the cultural shifts in business models and processes that "mobile everywhere" demands. These shifts aren't unique to any sector, but apply across the spectrum to retail, financial services, health care, media and entertainment - and they mean big business.

Keeping up with that business is also a big challenge for both consumer and B2B mobile tech, which Forrester expects to soon match the current B2C traffic load of 22 percent. That's a truly disruptive trend, and it places industry pressure on most internal development teams seeking to compete in the mobile tech environment as they deliver exceptional end-user experiences to meet these users' evolving expectations.

Those expectations include the fluid immediacy and seamless integration of mobile functionality that is changing the entire ecosystem. They create emerging Internet of Things (IoT) demands of mobile tech and app development teams that, at least in the near term, are only expected to deepen. Companies that fail to align their hiring strategies with the mobile tech moment are already a hot-minute behind - and so are the professionals they need.

We sometimes call that a New York minute as we watch the speed and energy of the city's tech sector growth and the recruiting demands for mobile specialists continue to explode. But the trend is obviously global and extends to China, India and beyond, with a momentum likely to change recruitment in the tech sector forever.

Attracting mobile talent and setting the tone for corporate culture
A 2015 Gartner forecast suggests that by 2017 the demand for mobile app development will grow at least five times faster than internal organizations' capacity to deliver. Open source vendor Red Hat expects the mobile developer market to increase by 50 percent. That's a lot of competition. Fortunately, for many organizations already feeling that pain, it's the mobile tech app developer who recognizes the opportunity. What enterprises need to do is find ways to connect with mobile's top professional talent.

Communication is key to attracting top-tier talent and creating those connections. Like their potential employers, mobile tech professionals also need to make the investment in understanding the language of business and the enterprise culture, and realize that now more than ever -and moving forward, forever - all of a firm's operations are essentially information technology operations. This becomes as true for public-facing business units as it does in the relationships of any B2B space.

Programming, app design and infrastructure professionals seeking to advance their existing skills, or to make that shift to agility and DevOps skill sets, will find plenty of creative opportunity to introduce new apps in a mobile market that is nowhere near saturation yet. Keep in mind that mobile tech opportunities aren't entirely about new development and launches. Maintaining and improving existing apps will create jobs too, and these processes rely on real-world feedback and relationships across the enterprise. The C-suite executives responsible for fostering this culture - and the HR professionals seeking to land top talent - need to align that culture with the real-time responsiveness that mobile tech candidates create and expect.

In some contexts, that may require serious commitments to changing the way the company does business on many levels. Leaders who optimally manage that change help to attract quality talent and communicate the values that will retain that top talent in mobile tech - but also in HR, marketing, sales and business unit management.

All the connections fail, though, without well-developed strategies to find mobile specialists in the first place. That's one reason to consider a consultant whose deft navigation of the recruitment process can deliver the mobile development expertise you need, in an environment where competition is now fiercest.

How to find that mobile talent
First, consider changes to your recruitment process, changes that create value for the candidates that you want to create value for you. Whether you're working through an in-house HR department or a recruiting specialist, mobile tech professionals benefit from a more personalized approach to talent acquisition. This is especially important in the startup space, but the emphasis on relationships matters in all recruiting contexts. Mobile tech specialists are likely to be most influenced by the same strategies that mobile has brought to our businesses, and that means the recruitment process must be smooth and user-friendly.

For some enterprises, creating a mobile app specifically for recruitment may be a solution. Hiring apps are becoming more mainstream as businesses seek to reach candidates via the same mobile device apps that you'll want them to create. Tweaks to the process - for example, changing your hiring website to a more responsive design, or accepting a LinkedIn profile link rather than a resume document upload  - make it easier for quality applicants to find your opportunity, understand your mission and respond to it.

Social recruiting is an option worthy of your serious consideration. There's still a real disconnect between people seeking talent and the overwhelming majority of jobseekers - 76 percent of social media users, by one count - who now find their jobs on Facebook. That's especially true of mobile app development prospects who are accustomed to using Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media platforms on mobile.
