IIoT Top News: The Automation Revolution

As technology advances and automation pushes business forward into the next industrial revolution, some might call this era, the rise of the robots. Anyway you describe it, automation has taken center stage, and that’s why this week’s IIoT top news is dedicated to automation. Tim Jennings, chief research officer at Ovum Research, believes we will see a dramatic increase with automation being utilized in business. Jennings further explains, this automation increase will require the blending of IT automation, business process automation, and cognitive computing – “integrated together, these capabilities will underpin the next wave of digital transformation, extending to a wider set of industry sectors and streamlining the creation and provision of new digital business capabilities.”

Nowadays, the job market is shifting with the demand for more automation. According to Gartner, when it comes to smart machines and autonomous devices, “Enterprises and individuals face the urgent need to define and develop harmonious relationships between people and machines.”

The UK has already seen an astonishing 800,000 jobs lost to automation over last fifteen years, but at the same time the tech industry has also created 3.5 million jobs. So, it’s not time to pull out those sci-fi predictions yet, technology is advancing, but there is still plenty of room for humans in this modern workplace. If anything, automation will finally give employees a new way to incorporate their skills more efficiently.

Automation week began, with industry 4.0 forced to implement more automation to fill the growing workforce demands. A little later in the week, we find ourselves across the pond, where economic factors have pushed Asian companies to automate more of their manufacturing floors. Then the week gets efficient with EnterpriseTech helping us understand the new value of workers in the IIoT. We finished this week’s learning with a look at the labor impacts automation is having in the UK and why automation is good news for humans and industry.

Hope you enjoy this week’s reading. As always, tell us what we missed!

1. Industry 4.0: Faced with lack of skilled workers, Rapid-Line invests in automation (MiBiz)

Out in Wyoming, some companies are turning to automation not to delete jobs, but as a direct result of not enough skilled workers to fill current openings. Mark Lindquist, the Rapid-Line President told MiBiz that, “While critics of automation have called the technology a jobs killer because it eliminates positions that people previously worked, Lindquist sees it as an opportunity to deploy his workers’ skills where they make the most sense.”

2. Rise of the Machines (Bangkok Post)

Economic labor costs have pushed some Asian manufacturing plants towards more automation. The automation shift is changing the job market, but experts still believe as technology advances there will still be a need for humans to fill certain positions. Mr. Perkins explained to Bangkok Post that, “Automation in the first industrial revolution made us stronger, automation in the second made us faster, and in the third we will have tremendously greater insights. The possibilities are enormous.”

Taking a Leap Toward the Industrial IoT (EnterpriseTech)

Industry4.0

As the industrial era integrates more IoT and automation, EnterpriseTech sees this as an opportunity to evaluate the assets value in the warehouse. Sudip Singh suggests that, “The evolution of smart, connected, and autonomous products is reshaping the manufacturing industry and its ecosystem.”

Has Labor a Place in the Age of Automation (BDlive Business Day)

There is still a need for today’s human workforce, but it is unclear what new jobs will be needed as automation becomes more mainstream. BDlive reports that, “Technology companies have far fewer constraints than traditional ones. They operate faster and over shorter periods of time as they move from one technology to the next.”

Have no fear, the robot is here: Why automation is good news for humans and industry (Process and Control Today)

Robots are starting to take on more regular tasks, such as a receptionist and a bell hop, but this doesn’t mean human aren’t still needed in the workforce. It is an adjustment mixing automation into the job market, so instead of feeling threatened by machines, we should be glad, now we can focus in on more detailed operations. Jonathan Wilkins, from European Automation think that, “If we applied this philosophy to industrial automation equipment rather than people, we can get ideas on how to make the most of technology that has become obsolete.”
