12 Cloud Blogs You Should Have Read in 2014 By @ActiveState | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Here are some excellent articles on Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), DevOps, Docker, Cloud Foundry, virtualization, microservices

Over the past year we've published some great posts on the ActiveState blog, all worth a read (if you haven't already). Phil Whelan (@philwhln), Bernard Golden (@bernardgolden), John Wetherill (@bcferrycoder), and Troy Topnik (@troytop) have contributed some excellent articles on Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), DevOps, Docker, Cloud Foundry, virtualization, microservices...the list goes on. So in case you missed it, here are 12 cloud computing blogs written in 2014 that you need to read:

1. Microservices and PaaS - Part I

What started off as attending a meetup has spawned six blogs and three webinars. I chose this particular blog only because it was the start of it...all of the blogs were insightful and generated further discussion on this hot topic. Read more

2. Is Docker The Right Abstraction For PaaS?

This was one of the more controversial blogs this year that created a lot of discussion. Yes, Docker is great technology, but Phil Whelan asks some big questions: "Is this really the right abstraction for developers? Docker brings a lot to the table, but as with everything there are pros and cons. So what do we lose here?" Read more

3. Cloud Foundry Community Advisory Board Meetings

This has been a monthly blog series this year. With the Cloud Foundry ecosystem being as strong and pervasive as it is, it's essential reading for anyone using a Cloud Foundry based PaaS, or looking into one. A great way to keep up on the happenings of the project. (BTW, If you haven't heard, the Cloud Foundry Foundation has officially launched!) Read more

4. Nine Rules for the New World of Applications

Just the concept of the trouble ticket being dead fills my heart with joy. And while we're certainly a far way from this happening, the mere idea brings hope to removing the friction and delays in getting applications to market. Bernard Golden gives you this rule, and others, to follow as you navigate through the new world of applications. Read more

5. Docker and the Application Supply Chain Challenge

With the explosion of the Docker ecosystem in 2014, Docker was the hottest topic this year. ActiveState is certainly no stranger to that enthusiasm and we saw its potential a while back when we incorporated Docker containers into Stackato. However, despite our appreciation of the technology, we recognize what Docker does -- and does not -- deliver. Read more

6. Developers: The New Kingmakers

Bernard Golden discusses the book by Stephen O'Grady, called "The New Kingmakers," about the rise of developers in organizations. While open-source and cloud computing have certainly been important factors, the idea that "software is eating the world" is also having a profound impact on IT in general, moving them from the back-office to the forefront of the business. Read more

7. Wasted IT Resources

This blog was one of my favourites, but didn't get quite as much exposure as the others. A great read that looks at how wasted IT resources translates into wasted dollars for corporations. I'll leave you with this quote (but you'll want to read more)..."Millions of enterprise workloads remain in data centers, where servers are 30% to 40% underutilized, and that's if they're virtualized. If not, they're only using 5% to 7% of capacity." Read more

8. Beyond Virtualization: The Rationale for PaaS in an IaaS World

This was a great 'starter' blog for those trying to figure out where PaaS fits into their day-to-day world of spinning up VMs. Troy Topnik looks at the history and where we are with PaaS--application containers, databases and how it all helps streamline the application development life cycle. Read more

9. DevOps: Hero Culture

Another blog by Phil Whelan, written earlier in the year, sets the tone for all of the DevOps blogs going forward. This thought provoking post focuses the discussion on hero culture being a blocker to DevOps. We all like the hero or want to be the hero, and preventing issues instead of coming to the rescue after the crisis may not be seen as glamorous. However, for companies seeking to adopt DevOps processes and culture, it is important to focus on fire prevention so you can do less fire-fighting. Read more

10. Get Out of the Weeds!

A comment on the blog said it all: "Genius". This blog was another personal favorite because it was a great reminder of how people can bog themselves down in the details (regardless of the profession). While the details are important and shouldn't be overlooked, you can lose sight of the bigger picture which can hurt a project. With PaaS, details such as provisioning servers are taken care of for you, so you can focus on your application. Read more

11. 10 Steps to the Cloud

Another great blog for those getting a handle on what the cloud will mean for their business. This blog (and webinar with the same name) outlines some of the steps companies can take to get to the cloud. Phil Whelan provides some great advice including starting small, embracing DevOps and using PaaS. Read more

12. Phil's Interviews with Leading Cloud Technologists

This wasn't just one blog, but rather a number of posts written by Phil. This year, he had the opportunity to interview Solomon Hykes, Ben Golub, Onsi Fakhouri, Mitchell Hashimoto and Beier Cai. Each interview provides an in-depth look at the cloud technologies from their respective companies.

Happy reading!

IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...
Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has been a laggard. Until now.
Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...

The current age of digital transformation means that IT organizations must adapt their toolset to cover all digital experiences, beyond just the end users’. Today’s businesses can no longer focus solely on the digital interactions they manage with employees or customers; they must now contend with non-traditional factors. Whether it's the power of brand to make or break a company, the need to monitor across all locations 24/7, or the ability to proactively resolve issues, companies must adapt to...

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...
Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...
