Universities Create Big Data Degree Programs to Address Growing Need
Big data has gone from big to enormous.
Now that most companies seek to make the most of their data in order to remain competitive, they need to hire the right analytical personnel. Unfortunately that is becoming difficult to achieve. McKinsey recently released a report on the growing talent shortage. The study explains that, by 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills, and 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use big data analysisto make effective decisions. Yikes!
Fortunately, universities are getting hip to the fact that they can address this need. Earlier this month the Wall Street Journal reported that at least five US business schools have rolled out stand-alone business analytics programs, where students are taught the discipline of using data to explore and solve business problems. Most of these programs, including The University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business's Master of Business Analytics program, are full-time for one year.
Europe is also on board. This week, The University of Amsterdam's Amsterdam Business Schoolannounced that, beginning next year, it will offer a part-time MBA program in Big Data and Business Analytics. The press release announced that, "The MBA in Big Data & Business Analytics is intended for hands-on big data experts, consultants, leaders in data-intensive industries and entrepreneurs in big data and business analytics."
More universities will also offer programs to train data specialists before the looming shortage reaches crisis proportions. Meanwhile, data analyst will be a secure career choice for decades to come.
