LTE World Summit Drives the Connected Generation Forward

Amsterdam, Netherlands, 4th July 2014 - Last week the annual LTE World Summit, the world's leading 4G event, took place at the Amsterdam Rai and served up everything LTE. 2900 attendees, of which 41% were from operators and 42% were director level or above, attended the event, with over 300 speakers and 150+ exhibitors delivering their latest solutions and experiences in LTE.

For the first time, this year's event was co-located with the 5G World Summit. The summit was used as a platform to help leading operators and solution providers understand the forces driving 5G, what technologies are required for 5G and which services 5G will enable. Discussions began with a networking innovation panel titled, "Paving the way towards 5G: Maximising future technologies including NFV & Cloud". The panel consisted of Erik Hoving, CTO, KPN Group; Haitham Abdulrazzak, CTO, Etisalat; Kerstin Günther, SVP, Technology Europe, Deutsche Telekom; Günther Ottendorfer, CTO, Telekom Austria Group and Yousef Abu-Mutaw, CTO, Zain Jordan. In addition to 5G, hot topics discussed were: VoLTE, LTE Roaming, Handling Mobile Data, Signaling, LTE Evolution and HetNets, to name only a few.

At the event, the LTE World Series was on-hand to interview many of the key speakers, such as Erik Hoving, CTO, KPN Group; Günther Ottendorfer, CTO, Telekom Austria Group; and Paul Ceely, Head of Network, EE, and these are now available to view on the LTE World Series YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/LTEWorldSeries.

The main conference boasted a host of top speakers from some of the industry's best recognised brands including: Telekom Austria Group, Vodafone Netherlands, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Zain Jordan, KPN Group, SK Telecom, Telkom Mobile, Bouygues Telecom and du. Also present were the leading solution providers including: Huawei, Oracle, Samsung, Alcatel Lucent, Mediatek, ZTE, F5, Juniper Networks, NEC and many more.

Günther Ottendorfer, CTO of the Telekom Austria Group, took part in a fireside chat with Ovum's Chief Research Officer, Mark Newman, where he shared his views on the results from the recent frequency auction in Austria. He also discussed how these results will impact the future development of LTE in Austria as well as discussing Telekom Austria's strategy for dealing with the huge data growth and peak demand via LTE.

The events free expo summits proved to be a major hit, with five tracks running throughout the event. They looked at the Future of LTE, LTE Public Safety, Network Optimisation, Maximising Spectrum and Accelerating Innovation. These sessions included speakers from Telenor, TCCA, Federal Police, BlackBerry, BT, Orange, Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), Ofcom and FCC.

The event played host to the Telecoms.com Awards 2014. This year's awards featured 16 categories which rewarded companies and organizations across the industry for innovation and excellence. The winners included, Alcatel Lucent, Amdocs, Huawei, LGU+, Samsung and ZTE to name a few.

In addition, to celebrate the events 10th anniversary, the organizers hosted a special drinks reception which enabled attendees to network with some of the industry's elite.

Supporting words from some of the events attendees:
"Ten years is a chunk of time in the lifecycle of an event that either ends as having outlived its usefulness, or as one that has leveraged its learning and maturity to offer a genuinely valuable experience. Informa's LTE World Summit is definitely an event of the latter category. Each year it has improved in the quality of attendees, the level of speakers and presentations, and even in its range of marketing services to sponsors. LTE World Summit has become as valuable to F5 as a core network vendor as the Mobile World Congress. Many thanks to the very professional Informa team."- Susan Becker, Product Marketing Director of the Diameter Signaling solution, F5 Networks

"Great opportunity to hear industry trends while networking."- Benoit Widermann, Marketing Manager, Belgacom

"Good overview of what's happening in the world of LTE." - Mark Caines, Director of Spectrum Policy, Ofcom

"A great event with great networking opportunities." - Minoo Abedi, St. Analyst, T-Mobile Netherlands

"Really good event to exchange about network evolution and to share experiences." - Vanesa Tornero Caballero, Orange

"By the far the best networking and influencing event for the global LTE industry, never to be missed." - Alan Hadden, Chair, GSA

"An interesting medley of various ecosystems from the mobile world, explaining various technology advancements and expressing different views, opinions and suggestions." - Zahid Ghadialy, Managing Director/CTO, eXplano Tech Limited

Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as soon as they are needed to take action.

WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was. You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong.
Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.
While many app developers are comfortable building apps for the smartphone, there is a whole new world out there. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Narayan Sainaney, Co-founder and CTO of Mojio, will discuss how the business case for connected car apps is growing and, with open platform companies having already done the heavy lifting, there really is no barrier to entry.
