RingPlus: About Real Time In-Call Translation

Los Angeles, CA, June 04, 2014 --(PR.com)-- On May 27, 2014, Microsoft demonstrated the Skype real-time translation app, trailing more than one year behind mobile carrier RingPlus, which deployed its real-time In-Call Translation Service and made it available to all RingPlus users on March 11, 2013. At the Code Conference last week, Microsoft presented the Skype Translator app that should provide fluent, cross-lingual conversations between speakers of different languages. Gurdeep Pall, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Skype and Lync, demonstrated the technology to the public while the RingPlus team was busy inviting their users’ friends and families to party with celebrities and other RingPlus users.

RingPlus has plenty of reasons to party: as a technologically advanced telco and low cost cell phone service in the United States (Adrian Covert, CNN May 15, 2014), attracting users is not a problem for them. And how advanced is RingPlus technology? RingPlus launched the live In-Call Translation Service more than 18 months before Microsoft demonstrated the Skype real-time translation app. RingPlus also demonstrated the technology to nearly all major telecoms worldwide.

RingPlus is a hands-on telecom and is well known for developing disruptive technology and being the first to market. In fact, RingPlus mobile users have long been enjoying access to translation services in over 12 languages on the Sprint®* Nationwide Network. Whether Microsoft’s solution to tackling translation technology is similar to or totally different from the RingPlus proprietary solution is not yet known.

RingPlus has a pending patent application (US 13840415) for a method for providing an application service, including a managed translation service, that is expected to be granted in the near future. The patent will significantly increase the value of RingPlus as a telecom and a technology powerhouse. The technology was invented by RingPlus CTO Evan McGee, Bryan Rite, and RingPlus Founder and CEO Karl Seelig. In addition, RingPlus developed a complimentary product to the In-Call Translator, called RingPlus Global, which breaks the shackles binding US-CDMA carriers. The enforceability of one of RingPlus’ inventions, U.S. Patent No. 7,006,608 for RingBack tone replacement, which is now a cornerstone of RingPlus services, was challenged by none other than AT&T Wireless (indemnified by Ericsson). The enforceability of this patent was upheld in 2010 in a precedential ruling in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., after a 5-year long, multi-million dollar legal battle.
