LTE Added to Scalable 3G Small Cell System Delivers Business-Class KPIs for Operators’ Large Enterprise Customers

SpiderCloud Wireless, Inc., the leading provider of scalable small cell Enterprise Radio Access Network (E-RAN) systems, today announced findings from ongoing LTE trials with leading mobile operators. The LTE trials used the award-winning SCRN-310 dual-band 3G/LTE Radio Node, where Radio Nodes were deployed in-building to serve large enterprise customers where each test scenario was designed to meet mobile operators’ Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The findings of the new LTE trials show performance reliability results consistent with similar 3G small cell test results released 12 months ago.*

“In these LTE trials, our E-RAN networks are surpassing even some of our most impressive 3G performance metrics, delivering better access capacity and therefore creating an overall better user experience in the small cell network,” said Michael Finlayson, SpiderCloud’s Vice President of Systems Engineering. “With each Radio Node having its own dedicated capacity for fast user access, a dual-band E-RAN system will need fewer Radio Nodes to connect more devices more often, as compared to a shared antenna system.”

Starting this month, SpiderCloud will start shipping commercial orders of the dual band 3G/LTE 310 Radio Node to select customers, and start trials of the dual-band LTE version of the same product later this Summer.

Commercially available for two years, SpiderCloud’s E-RAN system consists of a Services Node (SCSN) that can control over 100 self-organizing small cells that can be installed in just days using the existing enterprise Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN). SpiderCloud’s customers include Vodafone UK and Vodafone Netherlands, among others.

SpiderCloud offers a portfolio of Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) 3G and LTE small cells as part of the scalable E-RAN system, which can transmit up to 250 mW. The SCRN-310 supports 32 3G/HSPA+ channels, 32 active LTE users and supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE). LTE bands supported include: BC2 (1900), BC3 (1800), BC4 (AWS 1700), BC7 (2600) and BC13 (700). 3G bands supported include: BC1 (2100), BC2 (1900) and BC5 (850).

The Importance of a Scalable Small Cell System for 3G and LTE Small Cells

SpiderCloud’s small cell system consists of two elements: A Services Node and Multiple Radio Nodes. Up to 100 Radio Nodes (SCRN) can be deployed inside an enterprise. These Radio Nodes then connect to an on-premises Services Node (SCSN) using standard Ethernet (PoE), which is the central configuration and services enabler. The SCSN securely connects to the mobile operator’s core network with just one backhaul connection. This enables the operator to deliver managed mobility services to its enterprise customers. Without the presence of a local control point on an enterprise customer’s Ethernet network, a mobile operator cannot effectively coordinate small cells or support inter-small cell signaling. Without a local controller, hundreds and thousands of small cells have to connect back to the mobile operator’s gateways - slowing down handovers, connections and increasing the rate of interference coordination inside buildings for 3G and LTE small cells.
