Verizon Wireless’ Viewpoints
“In New England, Verizon Wireless customers enjoy an LTE advantage,” commented Christine Berberich, President of Verizon Wireless’ New England Region. “Investing yet another quarter billion dollars into our New England network empowers more of our customers to use their connected devices and accessories in faster, more innovative ways. As New England’s wireless leader, we’ll continue to aggressively invest in network coverage, reliability and technology, including LTE - the gold standard of 4G wireless technology.”
“We’ve invested more than $3.3 billion into our New England wireless network to provide customers the fastest, most advanced and most reliable coverage possible,” commented Dave MacBeth, Executive Director of Network for Verizon Wireless. “4G LTE is changing the way customers interact with the world via next generation apps, devices and solutions. By investing in wireless broadband we’re investing in local communities and economies where our customers live, work and play.”
4G LTE Coverage and Speed
The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is available to more than 273 million people in 476 markets across the U.S. – close to 89 percent of the U.S. population as of January 2013. The rapid rollout of 4G LTE will continue in 2013 with 4G LTE technology scheduled to cover the company’s entire nationwide footprint by the end of the year.
In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE customers should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

The Internet of Things (IoT), in all its myriad manifestations, has great potential. Much of that potential comes from the evolving data management and analytic (DMA) technologies and processes that allow us to gain insight from all of the IoT data that can be generated and gathered. This potential may never be met as those data sets are tied to specific industry verticals and single markets, with no clear way to use IoT data and sensor analytics to fulfill the hype being given the IoT today.

WebRTC defines no default signaling protocol, causing fragmentation between WebRTC silos. SIP and XMPP provide possibilities, but come with considerable complexity and are not designed for use in a web environment. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Matthew Hodgson, technical co-founder of the Matrix.org, discussed how Matrix is a new non-profit Open Source Project that defines both a new HTTP-based standard for VoIP & IM signaling and provides reference implementations.

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smar...
