HomeGrid Forum to Show High Speed G.hn Home Networking and Multi-Vendor Interoperability at CES

Exhibit Includes Live Demos of Multi-Node Networks and New G.hn Products

BEAVERTON, OR -- (Marketwire) -- 01/08/13 --

News highlights:

  • HomeGrid Forum is showing networks delivering multiple High Definition streams in live G.hn demos at CES in Las Vegas this week

  • Demos include multi-vendor interoperability over multi-node networks

  • G.hn ecosystem on display includes Comtrend, Marvell, Metanoia, Sigma Designs, Tangotec and Xingtera

  • Display also includes G.hn MIMO-based products from multiple vendors

  • System vendors' designs incorporating G.hn are showing for the first time

Home networks that include certified silicon products, interoperable systems and key features such as Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and Neighboring Domain Interference Mitigation (NDIM) are on show at the HomeGrid Forum booth at this week's CES International Show in Las Vegas (January 08-11).

With a mixture of live demonstrations and lively displays, HomeGrid Forum, the industry alliance driving the development and deployment of G.hn (Gigabit Home Networking), is showcasing its powerful Connected Home vision for hybrid networks. With HomeGrid Forum members Marvell, Metanoia and Sigma Designs showing live demonstrations of interoperability joined with displays from Comtrend, Tangotec and Xingtera, the HomeGrid Forum booth (Booth 21906, South Hall 1, Ground Level) is an important focal point for home networking trends, ideas and designs this year. The displays demonstrate home networks for the distribution of IPTV and multimedia content over existing in-home wires, providing the power, throughput and reach of a wired backbone for the hybrid home network.

CES 2013 G.hn demonstrations in the HomeGrid booth are displaying multiple HD streams from each node of the network. With several high definition services running over the network concurrently, the demonstrations set the scene for new high speed, high quality home networking environments that are easy and cost-effective to install. Vendor displays present G.hn-enabled products and designs from different manufacturers and the advanced G.hn features that set it apart from other home networking technologies. These include NDIM -- the interference mitigation measures incorporated within the G.hn standard for high-density MDU deployments -- and G.hn's MIMO option that improves robustness and throughput.

Matt Theall, President of the HomeGrid Forum, said: "This year's CES has given us the opportunity to showcase the latest developments in G.hn. Now that Certification of silicon is well under way, the system companies are really making every effort to get their designs ready for certification. Our focus is now increasingly on being able to demonstrate the benefits of G.hn in terms of its capabilities and advanced features in real world field tests, while ensuring our multi-vendor silicon and system eco-system is well recognized throughout the industry for its strength in numbers. This year at CES we are demonstrating that G.hn is the wired home networking technology to use from now on. It is real, it is ready to deploy, and it is the best over any wire."

G.hn is a powerful home-networking standard that defines the delivery of multichannel HD content throughout the home using existing wires, including powerline cables, coax and copper wires and plastic optical fiber. It is an open standard, developed by the ITU-T and based on the technical requirements set by service providers. It was recently the subject of a Designing Spaces TV broadcast which can be viewed online on the HomeGrid Forum website at http://www.homegridforum.org/

About HomeGrid Forum
HomeGrid Forum (HGF) is an industry alliance that supports the development and deployment of a unified coaxial, phoneline, powerline, and plastic optic fiber home networking technology called G.hn (Gigabit Home Networking). G.hn is based on standards developed by the UN's International Telecommunications Union - Telecom (ITU-T) standards development organization. HomeGrid ensures compliance and interoperability (C&I) of silicon and systems based on the technology through plugfests and C&I testing. HGF certification ensures a high level of consumer and Service Provider confidence in the quality of the certified products. A HomeGrid logo is issued for certified systems' packaging in the retail market.

WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was. You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong.

Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.
