WiGig multigigabit wireless technology is making tidal waves towards a wire-free dream at the largest consumer electronics show on Earth
Santa Clara, CA, January 7th, 2013 Unification with the WiFi Alliance, the imminent publication of IEEE 802.11ad and a multitude of companies talking about WiGig at 2013 International CES, will define January 2013 as the moment the technology truly matured into the mainstream.
Many of the world's leading vendors, testing houses and chip manufacturers will be actively discussing WiGig at CES this year. The technology is set to become the most important next generation wireless networking technology during 2013 as the certification program is finalised and a swathe of new products are designed and built.
The specifications developed by the Wireless Gigabit Alliance, the organization behind the new technology, enables speeds of up to 7Gbps using the unlicensed 60Ghz frequency band. The physical layer (PHY) and media access Layer (MAC) have been approved by IEEE and form the basis of the 802.11ad standard. Combined with advanced Protocol Adaption Layers (PAL), also designed by the WiGig Alliance, for PC, CE and Mobile applications, WiGig will facilitate a host of new and exciting applications.
"Even at the beginning of last year we could not have predicted what a runaway success 2012 would have been, including the unification with WiFi Alliance. WiGig is now in the best possible position to progress through certification and the initial stages of commercialization to become a world-leading wireless technology," said Ali Sadri, President and Chairman of the WiGig Alliance. "I am really pleased to see such positive steps being taken by industry leading companies - we are getting much closer to realizing our goal."
This news also follows the recent announcement of a new joint working group with the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) to advance the WiGig DisplayPort video standard certification and ABI Research forecasting that by 2016, annual shipments of devices with both Wi-Fi and WiGig technology will reach 1.8 billion.
