Sisvel Advances Toward Formation of DVB-C2 Patent Pool

- Owners of essential patents working with Sisvel to promote early and wide adoption of the DVB-C2 standard for the benefit of consumers and operators

AMSTERDAM, Sept. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Sisvel announced at the IBC2012 conference and exhibition that it has been coordinating meetings among owners of patents essential to the DVB-C2 standard for the purpose of creating a patent pool to offer licenses under their combined portfolio of patents to make DVB-C2 technology accessible to all users on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms and conditions.

The companies participating in Sisvel's effort are: DTVG Licensing, France Telecom, TDF, LG Electronics, and Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI).

Sisvel is pleased to report that the patent owners have already agreed on the following principles for the structure of a DVB-C2 patent pool:

  • No use fee for DVB-C2 transmissions.
  • A royalty rate not exceeding 1 Euro per standard DVB-C2 receiver.

Giustino de Sanctis, CEO of Sisvel International, noted that "We have made substantial progress with our participating patent owners in a relatively short period of time, and the joint licensing platform we are creating will promote broad-based adoption of the DVB-C2 standard by providing more certainty and confidence to all those considering the technology."

The facilitation process remains open to other companies holding patents believed to be essential for the DVB-C2 standard, as defined by the standard documents ETSI EN 302 769. Candidate patents must be reviewed for essentiality by an independent evaluator.

DVB-C2 is published as ETSI Standard EN 302 769 and is the most advanced digital cable transmission system developed by the DVB Project.
