SEI Quick Poll: Volatility Here to Stay, Advisors Still Playing Catch-Up on Strategy and Implementation

3 of 4 Advisors Say They Need to Learn More About Managed Volatility Strategies

OAKS, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/14/11 -- According to an SEI (NASDAQ: SEIC) Quick Poll released today, nearly all financial advisors believe market volatility is here to stay for the next two years, yet more than one-third (38 percent) have not implemented managed volatility strategies into clients' portfolios. While most advisors think the use of managed volatility strategies will be either "very important" or "helpful" in 2012, 76 percent say they need to learn more about these investment strategies. The survey was completed by 200 financial advisors.

"Clearly, most advisors are looking for investment strategies that protect their clients' portfolios during this market volatility," said Kevin Crowe, Head of Product Development for the SEI Advisor Network. "Yet, many recognize they don't currently have the answer. It's during markets like these that clients turn to their advisors to guide them through the rough seas. It is critical for advisors to identify resources to learn more about managed volatility strategies and incorporate them into their clients' portfolios."

Volatility is having an impact on clients. More than half (52 percent) of advisors say their clients are "seasick from the choppy ride" and more than one-third (39 percent) have "accepted this as the 'new normal'." The impact isn't just limited to psychological impact. Advisors said that of clients that made changes, 98 percent made their portfolio more defensive. But advisors also revealed that more than one-third of their clients (36 percent) have not made changes to their portfolio in the last six months.

In response to this need, for those clients seeking an equity allocation in their portfolios during volatile markets, SEI currently offers three managed volatility funds -- U.S. Managed Volatility, Global Managed Volatility, and Tax-Managed Managed Volatility. The U.S. Managed Volatility Fund has outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 800 basis points in the first three quarters of 2011. This same fund outperformed the S&P by 745 bps in 2008. (Click here for the Fund's performance report.) The three funds, which are part of SEI's stability focused strategies, use a multi-manager approach to portfolio construction and provide diversification by avoiding overconcentration in a single investment style, sector, or market trend.

"Investors are understandably concerned about their portfolios, so advisors need to seek new ways to alleviate those fears -- both from an investment standpoint and through communications," said Michael Byrne of Lighthouse Planning Consultants in Cherry Hill, NJ. "Whether volatility has become the 'new normal' or not, advisors should learn as much as they can about managed volatility strategies that will help them maintain their clients' portfolios value."

When asked how they planned to learn more about managed volatility, 50 percent said they will rely on investment partners, 35 percent will use other industry sources, and 15 percent will depend on internet research.

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
