Experiences Are the New Luxury Gift This Holiday Season

HOBOKEN, N.J., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- There are increasing signs that shoppers are looking beyond material gifts this holiday season and are in turn searching for experiential gifts to give family, friends and loved-ones.

"There is evidence that material pursuits do not lead to long-term happiness," says Michelle Geib, co-Founder and President of Xperience Days (http://www.xperiencedays.com/), an online retailer that offers experience gifts such as Flying Trapeze Classes, Formula Racecar Driving, or the opportunity to be a Chef for a Day.

"Academics, economists and even the United Nations are devoting more time to measuring happiness, and they seem to be reaching the same conclusions: Happiness will ultimately not be found in the latest electronic innovation or fashionable piece of clothing, but in a wealth of experiences," Geib says.

A recent research report by James Montier, Head of Global Equity at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, concluded that focusing on material goals makes people "less happy than those who focus on intrinsic aims such as relationships and personal growth. Spending on experiences rather than possessions seems to make people happier."

Some people may regard such a pronouncement as heresy, especially when it comes from a major investment bank like Dresdner. However, traditional notions of luxury continue to be undermined. Geib believes that "luxury products used to be defined by their scarcity and were restricted by price. These days one of the scarcest commodities is time, and one of the greatest luxuries is being able to step aside and do something memorable, something that is not subject to whims, trends or fashion." She concludes that, "while cashmere is certainly cozy and gadgets can be groovy, experiences are fast becoming life's new luxuries."

Geib suggests that Xperience Days is helping redefine gift giving and the idea of luxury with the concept of experience gifts. With hundreds of experiences to choose from, shoppers now have the opportunity to select and give 'life's new luxury: a memory that will last a lifetime'.

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
