Does Your IT Cause STD ?

STD = Schlepping Two Devices ... are you affected ?

STD = Schlepping Two Devices ... are you affected ? Those with the condition know the symptoms well. A company Blackberry in one pocket plus a personal iPhone or Android in the other. And the hassle goes well beyond carrying Two Devices. More cables and chargers to keep them charged, plus managing multiple contact lists, phone numbers and calendars. Victims rationalize it as a way to select their own device to do what they want and tolerate IT's policy as the only option to stay connected to the office. Inevitably the hassle of carrying two devices also means occasionally leaving the company Blackberry at home or the office defeating the potential productivity of anywhere access. On the surface IT may view this as the best way to maintain compliance and manage costs, however thousands ( maybe millions ? )  of users view it as a onerous policy that complicates their everyday life. For those in IT enforcing this policy it may be worth considering the benefits of a BYO ( Bring Your Own ) plan. A few considerations would include:

  1. Satisfied and productive employees with the device freedom they desire.
  2. Increase overall company productivity by enabling additional categories of employees to be productive while away from the office. ( not only the mobile sales and exec employees eligible for blackberry's )
  3. Instead of paying 100% of cell bills including premium enterprise data plans, share a percentage of the cost with employees.
  4. Reduce the overhead of tracking Blackberry devices as corporate assets.
  5. Reduce phantom service charges for unused company cell phones.
  6. Reduce management device management ( MDM / BES ) costs as well as maintenance and support overhead.

Of course there is a downside. Simply allowing native email access from personal iPhones and Androids will increase security risks and likely break existing policy that states company data is only allowed on company devices.

The good news for companies with Citrix XenApp now have a new option. Project GoldenGate is an email client app that is hosted on company XenApp servers and talks to Exchange servers all inside the data center. The app looks and feels like a native email client on iPhones and Androids and even does more, like follow-up notifications and better calendar options than native clients. The User Interface is remoted to the smartphone securely using SSL so security and compliance stays under IT control with nothing but the Citrix Receiver app on the device. There is never any company data on the device to cause security or compliance issues. If your in IT and have users complaining about STD, consider this treatment as a solution.

Acknowledgment: To the two guys at the Midway Airport Bar last month who helped name the condition, having suffered with the symptoms for the past two years.

Today's workforce is trading their cubicles and corporate desktops in favor of an any-location, any-device work style. And as digital natives make up more and more of the modern workforce, the appetite for user-friendly, cloud-based services grows. The center of work is shifting to the user and to the cloud. But managing a proliferation of SaaS, web, and mobile apps running on any number of clouds and devices is unwieldy and increases security risks. Steve Wilson, Citrix Vice President of Cloud,...
When Enterprises started adopting Hadoop-based Big Data environments over the last ten years, they were mainly on-premise deployments. Organizations would spin up and manage large Hadoop clusters, where they would funnel exabytes or petabytes of unstructured data. However, over the last few years the economics of maintaining this enormous infrastructure compared with the elastic scalability of viable cloud options has changed this equation. The growth of cloud storage, cloud-managed big data e...
