Beta Version of New NetBeans CVS Support Announced

New NetBeans CVS Support Version Now Available in development build

The NetBeans team has announced a Beta version of the new redesigned CVS support, an innovative approach to integration of a Version Control System (VCS) into the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The new module provides a simple, efficient IDE versioning workflow and intelligent support for common versioning operations.

The module is not derived from the current NetBeans VCS support, but instead is meant as a lightweight approach with less focus on architectural abstraction and much more attention to User Interface (UI) functionality.

Some of the new features include:
  • Full project integration
  • Versioning view (shows all changes in selected context, local changes in real time)
  • Refactoring integration
  • Visual indication of changes using colors
  • Tight editor integration (for example, revision annotations visible directly in the editor)
  • Support for working with branches
In the future, the "light" approach will be used to provide workflow-friendly support for Subversion, SourceSafe, etc. thus eventually replacing the old VCS system as known in NB 4.1 entirely. For the next release of the IDE, new CVS will be a part of the standard distribution while the 4.1 VCS system will still be available on NetBeans Update Center. As both systems provide very different UI experiences and feature sets, only one system can be used at a time - which means it will not be possible to mix the old VCS with the new redesigned CVS support in any way.
The preview version of the new NetBeans CVS has now been fully integrated into the latest NetBeans development builds and screenshots.
