Paessler Site Clocks Clouds

CloudClimate plans to add new providers and vendors and new sensor types down the road

Paessler AG, which does network monitoring software for Windows systems, is using its widgetry to monitor the performance of Amazon EC2, GoGrid CloudServers and NewServers' cloud hosting services.

The results are up on www.cloudclimate.com.

CloudClimate monitors the internal performance of cloud servers by running short load tests for CPU, memory and disks every five minutes. The site also has live performance data for Amazon's CloudFront and Mosso's CloudFiles CDN hosting services as well as Amazon's S3 file storage service.

All probe systems (plus additional VPS systems) send HTTP and PING requests to each other every minute to measure network performance and graph the results.

CEO Dirk Paessler says CloudClimate.com is based on two building blocks. The first is a globally distributed installation of the company's PRTG Network Monitor with a one-core server installation (running on Amazon EC2) and a number of remote probes used to measure system performance and monitor the performance of network services. The second is a content management web site created and hosted by beyond content GmbH that includes graphs developed by PRTG.

The remote probes for CloudClimate are installed on servers in Amazon EC2's US East Region (USA East Coast), its Europe West Region (Ireland), GoGrid Cloud Servers (San Francisco) and NewServers.com (Miami).

For perspective, Paessler AG is running a number of probes on select low-cost VPS servers around the globe hosted by VPSLand, HostEurope, webhosting.co.uk, Usonyx and HostingPanama.

CloudClimate plans to add new providers and vendors and new sensor types down the road.
