The Myths and Realities of Vehicle Theft: Apathy is a Vehicle Thief's Biggest Ally

Boomerang Tracking/LoJack Launches Second Annual Vehicle Theft Awareness Month to Educate the Public on Proactively Protecting Their Vehicles

MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 07/02/09 -- Consumers across the country continue to pay the price for the ongoing problem of vehicle theft, yet many are not taking the measures to protect their own vehicles. Boomerang Tracking Inc., Canada's leader in stolen vehicle recovery, is launching the second annual Vehicle Theft Awareness Month in July to bring the reality and consequences of theft to the public's attention.

Vehicle Theft Myths versus Realities

The prevalence of vehicle theft and its consequences are real for every driver, with a vehicle disappearing from Canadian streets every 4 minutes. "While many drivers might feel like vehicle theft is a problem that will never happen to them, that is unfortunately not always the case," commented Scott Nilson, General Manager of Boomerang Tracking. "Every driver has a part to play in stopping vehicle theft: it is essential that consumers take a proactive role in protecting themselves. We believe that the more layers of protection a driver uses, the safer their vehicle will be."

The most common misconceptions about vehicle theft are outlined below:

"Theft doesn't happen in my city"

- Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary represent almost half of the theft in Canada - nearly 83,000 cars that disappear every year are from these cities

- The remaining 64,000 cars are stolen in cities and towns across Canada-no matter where you live, theft is a problem

"My insurance will cover the costs"

While it is true that most insurance policies will cover a vehicle loss, drivers should expect to pay at least $2,500 in out of pocket expenses from a theft in lost vehicle contents, loss of use of vehicle, loss of down payment, potential rental car costs and increases in insurance premiums on a replacement vehicle.

"No one wants MY car, its too old"

Thieves are smart shoppers, and do not limit themselves only to new or expensive vehicles. Every vehicle is a target. Newer vehicles are stolen for resale or shipment overseas, but as a vehicle ages and the more common it is on the road, the more value it has for its parts to be sold on the black market.

Top Recovered Vehicles Are In A Driveway Near You
